Texas Holdem is basically a variation of seven card stud. There are two pocket cards dealt to each player. These are both dealt face down. There are five cards placed in the middle of the table. The flop are the first three cards that are turned over. The five cards that are placed in the center are all community cards. This means that you can use any of these cards to make your poker hand, but you must use the two pocket cards.
Poker hands are always five cards. The highest hand you can get in Texas Holdem is a Royal Flush, which is basically a straight flush with an Ace high. This is all cards in a row of the same suit. This is a rare occurrence in stud poker, which Texas Holdem is. Stud poker means that you cannot get any more cards after the deal is done. Draw poker is when you can toss away cards and get three more (four if you have an Ace).
If you do not have a pair of Jacks or better after the flop, go out. This is common strategy in poker. A pair is most likely not going to win a game of Texas Holdem poker. Chances are that the winner will have three of a kind or better.
Next to a straight flush, the best hand in poker is four of a kind followed by a full house. A full house is three of a kind of one card and a pair of another card. All of these hands are big winners in Texas Holdem poker.
A flush is the next best hand you can get after a full house. A flush is all the same suit of cards. This is followed by a straight which is five cards in a row. Three of a kind is next, then two pair and then a pair. In some cases, three of a kind wins a Texas Holdem game.
After the flop is the turn. This is when the fourth card of the community cards is turned over. One way to ascertain whether or not to stay in the game is to see how many people are betting. If you have three of a kind and two other people at the table are raising their bets, it is best to get out a chances are that one of them has a better hand than you. If everyone is folding, which is dropping out, then you might stay in for the river, which is the fifth and final card in the Texas Holdem game.
One of the things that makes Texas Holdem poker such an exciting game is the anticipation surrounding the community cards. The flop, turn and river are all part of the excitement of the game. However, if you are not sitting with a pair after the flop, you are better off to go out of the game.
